#BlackHistoryMonth Did You Know: Gwendolyn Brooks is known today as a talented, impactful poet. She was the first Black author to win the Pulitzer Prize (1950) and she also served as a consultant for the Library of Congress (another first for Black women)! #BlackHistoryMatters
#BlackHistoryMonth Did You Know: Robert S. Abbott started the Chicago Defender newspaper in 1905 (after graduating from law school, but not being permitted to open his own law firm). Abbott's paper had an estimated 500,000 readers, & he became a millionaire! #BlackHistoryMatters

Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman to be elected to United States Congress. From 1969 - 1983, Chisholm represented a New York district, and she also ran for president in 1972. #BlackHistoryMatters
